“Sometimes I get called into a meeting, and I don’t even know what it’s for!” Young Person
The steering group ‘Independent Young Advisors’ decided it was time for change. In 2016 they produced a guide for school and college staff about how to plan meetings, especially Annual Review meetings so that they are more inclusive and accessible for young people and children.
The ‘Independent Young Advisors’ (IYA) are the youth steering group for Haringey’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice & Support Service (SENDIASS). They have been working since 2013 to help Markfield plan and deliver this service directly to young people.
The group have had training form the Council for Disabled Children about the SEND reforms and from staff at Markfield. They have helped develop publicity for young people to find out about the service and given feedback about their experiences.
The IYA Annual Review Guide has been shared with all Haringey SENCOs. There are lots of useful tips and it could help parents and young people or children prepare for the meetings too.
